The cover grabbed my attention and the description and decent reviews sucked me in. I’m glad I made this leap. Was it perfect? No. But did I enjoy myself? Yes.This felt different than other books in this subgenre. Ava’s introduction into this world didn’t happen until she was 23, so she learned as we (the readers) learned. I liked the moments when her old world clashed with her new world (cue the foraging for food scene) and I liked her cadre, for the most part.What didn’t work as well for me?It was both too fast and too slow. This book was pretty long but only spanned a few days. In the amount of time I was reading, it felt like so much more should have happened in the story and it also felt like too much had happened within their relationship given the brief time they’d known each other.It was a little repetitive, at times. Lots of unfulfilled proclamations that no one would ever hurt Ava again.Where’s Shay? Ava was deeply protective of her brother in the beginning but he felt like more of an afterthought for both Ava and the author for the rest of the book.
