As many other reviewers have stated, the first third of the book is primarily world-building and establishing the score, in the sense of giving gravity to the initial actions of the protagonist, as well as the stakes involved with regards to what happens over the course of the story. As a veteran, it was both heartbreaking and invigorating to follow Luca through the climax of his military career, and I think that the author captured the spectrum of emotions that go along with military (and specifically enlisted) life masterfully.The second two-thirds, aided by solid world building and tad conspicuous amount of foreshadowing, follow in the vein of what I would imagine as a typical LitRPG: introducing game mechanics in a literary form. Luca, desperately needing direction, is given divine intervention and a means to reclaim his future from an fate foisted upon him unjustly. I was initially a bit unimpressed with the characterization of Leshra, but she quickly grew on me, her childishness and immaturity very relevant to her past as a spurned deity. Overall, I enjoyed the cast of characters that sprung up from the shores of Wylish Island, and loved getting to view the world through their eyes, if only for the brief interludes between acts.
