Meanwhile, light years away, intelligence officer Ashton Childe is tasked with locating the poet, Ona Sudak, who was aboard the missing spaceship. What Childe doesn’t know is that Sudak is not the person she appears to be. A straightforward rescue turns into something far more dangerous, as Trouble Dog, Konstanz, and Childe find themselves at the center of a conflict that could engulf the entire galaxy. The acclaim is definitely deserved—Embers of War did what it promised to do, and did it well. It didn’t take itself too seriously or try too hard, which is a breath of fresh air, in my opinion, where space opera is concerned. I wasn’t overloaded with technobabble, and because the narrators all spoke with conviction on topics where science was concerned, even though I have one brain cell I never just sat there like ‘wtf is going on’ or ‘but that doesn’t make any sense.’ I genuinely, genuinely felt immersed in the world building, like I was aboard the Trouble Dog itself.Embers of War has rekindled my love for science fantasy and opened my third eye towards the space opera genre. Surely there must be more stories out there like this one, where there’s heart and soul and originality, where the author is not trying to write the next Star Wars, but I digress.
