Anne Sweeney has an incredible gift of prose which shows through the dialogue the inner processing of a teenage girl’s loss of her father. Her observations of her mother and overhearing her phone calls , show how keenly watchful she was of her mother’s process. She sees her mother’s strength, determination, tough work ethic and love for her family. She also overhears her mother tell her aunt, “I’m drowning”. The story unfolds as we see what happens to the whole family as their mother navigates her journey to stay afloat and get her family to feel alive again.
