Now that the petty stuff is over—there are three main parts to this story. There is the interesting and down-to-earth story of Carey’s interpersonal relationships: I especially liked the parts about Carey’s close friendships and the budding romance with Cris. I thought it was cool that Carey’s grandmother had a home health aide. There were some moving sections about death and memory loss. I think these scenes in the beginning of the book are what made me expect the entire story to be grounded.The next part is the romance: the way things develop, the scenes the characters have between them. The tension is overwrought. It is difficult to like Carey when it comes to the romance. Carey is in the wrong. Carey is a terrible romantic partner. They are teenagers, so neither of them are good at communicating, and that’s fine, but it is not a good source of conflict in this story. It is only tedious. Once again, the book is self-aware about this, because Carey acknowledges “that there would be no movie if they told each other the truth.” This self-awareness does not translate into charm. It’s just bad.
