That said, the book drags more than a bit in the middle, and while the end is satisfying in many ways, it lacked the punch I was somehow expecting. It felt like more should have happened or there should have been a twist that didn’t come. Part of that might BE the narrator. He was an engaging teller of his tale, but with some quite notable exceptions that I will not spoil here, his story is that of someone to whom events mostly happened, rather than the person shaping those events. That makes him a bit less satisfying as a protagonist.
