I already liked book one of the “Captain Kit Brightling Novels” a lot and book two is a straight continuation that carries on with all the good stuff. Starting with the great main character of Kit Brightling, the naval captain with a magic alignment to the sea, serving the Isles and their queen Charlotte in an alternate Europe during the Napoleonic wars.Kit is young, adventurous and sometimes hot-headed, but her duty towards her country and her crew comes always first. She makes mistakes, especially in her relationships, but she isn’t too stubborn or afraid to remedy them, when she thinks about things and always allows different perspectives [although I love it that she is captain through and through.. even on other ships.. but no spoilers here…].She again works together with the viscount Rian Grant and there is a lot of chemistry between them that leads to new developments in their relationships, which I also won’t spoil. Things.. progress… in a way… The two of them work undercover in enemy country and fight very cool sea battles all the while trying to get more intel on the escaped former emperor of Gallia [the alternate version of Napoleon and the subsequent history] and in pursuit of an just as dangerous enemy, magic wise.
