Brief Summary A School for Unusual Girls by Kathleen Baldwin

As another reviewer noted, it is not at all like the Finishing School series by Gail Carriger, though I admit that I selected this book to read precisely because I wanted to see how the two might compare. This novel is not a lighthearted romp, as is clear immediately, but that is not a problem. It is very much about the angst of being a misfit, which was perhaps both underdeveloped and overdone–in other words, it was overdone enough to be cliché, and didn’t really provide anything new except that our focus now is STEM. In previous incarnations, our odd, smart, misfit heroine would be a *reader.* Nowadays, she’s a scientist. And that’s fine. But it is very odd that her intelligence and interest in science put her in a school with a clairvoyant, an animal charmer, a–brilliant farmer/financial wizard?, and a hmmm… *person* charmer. All of them unmarriageable misfits, which is the commonality. Which, of course, is no commonality at all. They are interesting, but the whole situation, if you don’t suspend disbelief, is a bit contrived. I did, however, manage to suspend disbelief.
