Prepare to be whisked off to the Devon coastline with all the beautiful scenery and wonderful characters that Liz Eeles creates for our delight. Lettie Starcross is the heroine of the this story as she travels down to Devon to fulfil the dying wishes of her beloved Great Aunt Iris. There are flashbacks to what went on during the Second World War and then lots of present day stories that affect small tourist towns. Liz’s characterisation particularly of older people is wonderful. Please, please read this book – you won’t be disappointed.

Brief Summary of the Book

Lettie went to Heaven Cove to try and found out about her Aunt Iris past. Iris’s family was originally from Heaven’s Cove . Iris grew up there but moved away and never returned. Before she died she gave Lettie a key and made her promise to find what it was for . Lettie lost her job and she wanted to find out for Iris. She lived in London . She met a man who lived their and because when he was married his wife cheated and lied to him. His wife became pregnant and he though the baby was his until her 8th month and he found out about the the other guy she been seeing. When her aunt died Lettie found a letter hidden among some of her aunt’s things. It was from a guy she was in love with but he went off to war. His family always blamed Iris for him going off to war and getting killed. Lettie was afraid of the ocean because she almost drowned in one while she was small. Even though she was afraid of it she tried to rescue an elderly guys dog . The dog was all he had and meant everything to him. She was rescued by the guy she met and liked. Only he was the nephew of her aunt’s dead boyfriend. Lettie found out little information on her aunt’s friend. When he died her aunt was suppose to receive a desk he made but his parents never gave it to her. His family blamed her for him going off to war when he had a medical condition and didn’t really have to go. It wasn’t until she rescued the dog and was rescued her self that she spent the night in her aunt dead boyfriends room where the desk was. There was no locks on the desk so the key didn’t belong to the desk. But because of the storm that made her and the dog get rescued she spent the night in his room. She remembered she saw a desk like his in a museum once and it had secret compartments. So when the power went out and she couldn’t sleep she went to the desk for matches and found the secret compartments. In it was a letter from her boyfriend whom she tried to convince to stay and not go in the army. The reason Iris moved away was because she lost her love and his family always blamed her. But after Lettie found the letter his sister no longer blamed Iris.
