‘A Killer’s Game’ is the first installment in a new series of mystery/suspense novels written by Isabella Maldonado and featuring FBI Agent Daniela “Dani” Vega. Part police procedural, part Hunger Games, the novel is an entertaining read. I’m a fan of series novels, and while I was reading this, I was also reading Mick Herron’s ‘Reconstruction.’ Herron’s writing is beautiful and his plots convoluted, Maldonado’s writing is workmanlike and her plots, while not exactly predictable, are straightforward. Comparing the two is like comparing an Academy Award winning movie and an action-hero flick. I happen to like both kinds of movies, as well as both kinds of novels, but you need to know what you’re getting into beforehand.
