They were the first twins known to survive it. Growing up, Ariel and her sister endured numerous medical procedures to keep them alive. Doctors expanded the twins’ skulls and broke bones to make room for their growing organs. After each surgery, the sisters felt like strangers to each other, unable to recognize themselves in the mirror. Their case attracted international attention. A French fashion magazine said Ariel and Zan “resembled the works of Picasso,” as if they were abstract paintings, not girls just trying to survive.

There were specific scenes that I particularly enjoyed: many of the cheerleading scenes, especially the first one, scenes that involved a lot of dialogue and felt more like a story.I had a few issues with the book though. I come from reading almost all fiction and am used to that. It was jarring to have so many cuts in scenes and jumping around from different dates / years / etc. One example is when Zan went through surgery and Henley jumped to a scene years prior where she accidentally hit her sister in the head with a baseball bat. I understood why she had it there: as a parallel in feelings of potentially losing her. But my mind had trouble going back and forth between the scenes. This happened a LOT in the book. Jumping from one scene to another then back to the first.My other issue stemmed from the “show, don’t tell” aspect… Henley did a LOT of telling… and not much showing.
