I know I didn’t do it justice; there’s no way I could. The story wasn’t easy for me. Magical realism is not a part of my world. But that is the reason I read such a book as When We Were Birds–to encounter something which is different, something new and wonderful. Yejide and Darwin are in many ways different from each other. I was drawn more to Darwin. He was man in whom I could see myself. Yejide was a part of a world, as I’ve said, that is foreign to me. Bringing them together worked marvelously.
