We Are Not Like Them Book Review

” We Are Not Like Them ” is a good book that you can read online or download to read it later. Before starting the reading or downloading, here is the summary of the book that you can read. Jen and Riley have been best friends since kindergarten. As adults, they remain as close as sisters, though their lives have taken different directions. Jen married young, and after years of trying, is finally pregnant. Riley pursued her childhood dream of becoming a television journalist and is poised to become one of the first Black female anchors of the top news channel in their hometown of Philadelphia. But the deep bond they share is severely tested when Jen’s husband, a city police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed Black teenager. Six months pregnant, Jen is in freefall as her future, her husband’s freedom, and her friendship with Riley are thrown into uncertainty. Covering this career-making story, Riley wrestles with the implications of this tragic incident for her Black community, her ambitions, and her relationship with her lifelong friend. We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride

Brief Summary We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride

The story begins with the murder of an unarmed Black teenager by two white cops and ends with the grief of the mother who must live with the loss. In between, in alternate chapters we follow the perspectives and navigation of the fallout for a Black woman (Riley) and her white friend (Jen) who is married to one of the cops. I was insanely grateful to the authors for not succumbing to the usual trope. In this story, the Black woman is sophisticated, is cognizant of how her skin color and gender has shaped her experience, her family is flawed but loving, and holds her when she needs them. Her white friend, with attendant privilege, is less connected with how her race has shaped her experience and sadly has not found the language to analyze her experience of class. She was born to a teenage mother, who is essentially absent from her life and Jen is left to be practically raised by Riley’s family.
