What a well-done debut! I like women’s novels that consist of fully fleshed out characters, not people popped onto and off of the page to prop up the protagonist. Maggie Smith executed this thoroughly and with great descriptions of people and settings. Megan, her mother Helen, and journalist-hero Jocelyn are individuals on the page. Even a woman with a minor, but important role, fills the pages she’s given. I could visualize her and feel for her journey. The women are full and visible and oh-so complex. When you think you know where the story is going … well, do you really?I’m a harsh judge of first books. (I’ve always been glad to discover Connelly’s Bosch books at number four—I kept reading forward then went back to the beginning. Good, but would I have continued? Maybe.) So, not that I think a first book will be perfect, but I want to know the author put her best efforts forward.
