THE POISONER’S RING was a fascinating time-travel historical procedural sequel. As readers learned in the first book of this series, Mallory was attacked in the present day Canada where she works as a detective and sent back to the 1800s in Scotland, inhabiting the body of a maid who was similarly attacked. She is employed by an unusual set of siblings, the sister who is an expert chemist and the brother who is an undertaker but would be a physician if allowed by society (prevented in part by the color of his skin). They know her story, and she helps Duncan, the brother, as he assists the police, particularly McCreadie who values his opinion, with solving crimes.Although the book begins with Mallory on unsure footing with Duncan, he soon brings her in on a case of seeming arsenic poisoning, thought to be caused by unhappy wives who have formed a Poisoner’s Ring. However, almost immediately, Mallory thinks this is too far-fetched to be the case. When the next victim is a wealthy man, and in fact, Duncan’s brother-in-law, they really get pulled into the case of figuring out who did it, so that Duncan’s sister will not be accused. The answers are anything but simple as they research the poison and what the deceased were really up to in the time before their demise.
