Faced with tremendous odds, Gunny has to lead his Marines in an almost impossible task. That is nothing new to the US Marines. Impossible tasks are the Corps’ forte. The novel opens as Gunnery Sergeant McCardle and the rest of the marines of the embassy detail in New Delhi prepare to receive the President of the United States. As stressful as any such presidential visit would ordinarily be, there is the added tension that this particular president is responsible for the virtual dissolution of the Marine Corp – a once mighty brotherhood that is now reduced to mere handful guarding the president and America’s embassies around the world.No sooner does the president arrive than events diverge from the usual script for such proceedings. In short order the embassy is under siege in a suddenly hostile city. The survivors face a daunting situation – they’re massively outnumbered, have little food and water, and are all but cut off from rescue or reinforcement. While politicians strive for a diplomatic solution, time is running out as factions within the Indian government move toward the endgame.
