Viets does it again, and better than ever before. A young couple accepts a dare (pays handsomely for the privilege, in fact) to spend a night in a haunted crypt with only one way in. The next day they are found murdered. Angela Richman is called upon to do her job as medical investigator, which starts her on a rollercoaster ride of an investigation, an investigation which open up deep wounds not only in Chouteau Forest but also St. Louis. The plot is complex, and enriched by references to real places, institutions, and businesses in St. Louis (Chouteau Forest is imagined). Every character has a secret, and their secrets make them more human to the reader. By the end of the book Viets has woven a dense tapestry of relations and connections, some surprising, between numerous places and people. Most mysteries are read once and done, but this book has nuances that make me want to read it again already.
