No one can get in, and no one can get out. Alone in a strange place, Jamal doesn’t know where to turn…until he meets hacker Marco, who knows more than he lets on, and Catherine, an AWOL basic training graduate, whose parents helped build the initial plans for the Dome. As unrest in Baltimore grows throughout the days-long lockdown, Jamal, Marco, and Catherine take the fight directly to the chief of police. But the city is corrupt from the inside out, and it’s going to take everything they have to survive.

The representation this novel offers is important. There isn’t that much genre fiction starring a queer character, much less a queer character of color, making for a refreshing read on two accounts.The adolescent simplicity of the narration is engaging from start to finish, and Jackson maintains the thrill from chapter to chapter. The primary characters are entertaining.Overall, I enjoyed the novel and applaud Jackson for tackling such a bold premise, but there were a few elements that seemed weak to me.For one, most of the antagonists felt tropey and flat. In fairness, Jackson gives nods to complexity and nuance, but aside maybe from the governor, they didn’t feel much like real people to me. Some of my impression might have been from the word choices and the fact that a lot of the characterization is filtered through Jamal’s analyses – in other words, a little bit more telling than showing.
