This book stands alone from book 1 (although if you haven’t, I recommend reading it because it’s awesome), but does pick up where the events of book 1 ended, with a bit of a prologue for context of Astrid starting to work with the Shades, but also showing how she’s not trusted. Because Astrid was the best of the Hunters and responsible for many Shade deaths. Except now she knows that Shades aren’t the monsters she was raised to believe since her younger sister is married to their king. And it turns out the Hunters are the bad guys so Astrid (along with some other ex-Hunters) are now in the shadow realm. Where no one wants Astrid because of her history, including Soren as the Captain of the Guard, except Soren also can’t stay away from her.My heart hurt a lot for Astrid and her loneliness. She was very self-aware, but was also selling herself short while struggling with guilt and her identity. She was far more caring and compassionate than I thought she would be and than she considered herself.
