In the grand tradition of Horatio Hornblower or the great US Army series by W.E.B. Griffin, we have a series that goes through the career of a single person. It started with the soldier as a recruit and will follow him up the ranks to the end of his time of service.
We get to know the protagonist well enough to care about him, to care if the enemy kills him or not. I think the combat situations are quite well crafted. They seem realistic to me and exciting. I also like the future society. It is written in a casual way, not long explanations of how the society evolved, it just is and the characters work within that framework. That is as good a way to work with future social evolution as any and doesn’t let that get in the way of the story. Ditto the FTL drive. It is just there, no long explanation of how it works and all that. The characters go to different planets and that is that.
