I identified most closely with our heroine, Helen St. John. Helen is a widow and a mother who has been dealt one too many blows in her life. On top of that, she suffers from-what we know to be-an autoimmune disease. I have Addison’s disease-a death sentence in those days-but it allowed me to not only relate to her physical challenges, but to the ways in which she is treated by her late husband and numerous doctors. Treated like a fragile flower, Helen always sought to never complain or inconvenience anyone-her goal was to remain pleasant and accommodating. This aspect of Helen’s character made me uncomfortable because it was plain to see that she was being maltreated and she deserved so much more. Over the course of this story she finds her voice, finds peace in her physical limitations, and demands the love that she so highly deserves. It was a heart-warming and sweet experience to see her find her way towards a happier existence. And I have to add that her proposition of Ian was so funny and sweet!

Brief Summary of the Book

Our hero, Ian McAllistair, is a bit of an enigma for the first half of the story. I felt that I knew Helen so well, and Ian felt like a foil to her character. On looking closer, I believe that his particular skills as a spy allowed for him to keep a distance from people. Yet, as enamored as I was with Helen, so was Ian. Slowly we see his walls crumble and watch him become vulnerable with our heroine, and his motivations are revealed and questions are answered. This is an entertaining read that shows two people finding peace with their pasts and moving forward while political unrest is brewing in the background. I would recommend this story to those who are familiar with this series, but you could pick it up as a standalone- although there would be a few gaps regarding the secondary characters. I also recommend that those triggered by chronic illness check trigger warnings.
