They found the bodies on a Tuesday.” ‘Every Last Fear’ starts with that brilliant hook. The rest of the book is good, even very good, but there are a few stretches of credibility. I liked the short chapters, but the changing POV became hard to follow at times. So many characters. Keeping them and the time line straight was a challenge. But I could tell the author tried to refresh from time to time. Thanks for that. The mystery part worked for me as I was thrust ever onward by my desire to know who-dun-it and later, how was Finlay going to pull all these subplots together. I enjoyed watching him pull it off. For the most part I thought the characters were well done. I especially connected with Agent Keller. The small parts with her family were good. And Maggie Pine and her dad, Evan. They had a great bond. They never gave up on Danny and their quest to get him out of prison. Thus, they were easier to manipulate by the bad guys. I did not know how all this would converge into a satisfying ending, but Finlay pulled it off. A big problem was Danny, High School jock. I don’t think anyone in today’s world would allow themselves to be interrogated about a murder and not ask for a lawyer. Also, judges would not allow a guilty plea for murder without at least a public defender present. All he had to do to get on a better track is tell the judge, “I didn’t know that I was confessing to this!”
There are more gaffs, but these were particularly annoying. Still, it was a good read. Small doses of description. Not much brainstorming.
