The plot was formulaic and predictable, like reading the book version of a Hallmark movie. While the summary centers around the old ladies’ club, that was actually a small part of the book. Much more of it centered around a love triangle between MC’s ex-husband, MC, and a vapid, two-dimensional male character who is there only to serve as impetus to re-igniting the lost love of the first two.Consequently, much of this reads as wish-fulfillment fantasy: a shirked divorcee gets the pleasure of having her ex grovel for her affection while being doted upon by a handsome, successful “great guy.” Additionally, the majority of Lewis’ writing consists of info-dropping, exposition, and internal monologue. Very little actually happens in the story, and the MC is mostly reactive and passive (even the culminating decision of the book is made FOR her rather than BY her). The extensive attention given to specificity and details (We were on our way to Men in Black while listening to 4 Non Blondes while drinking ice cold Diet Dr. Peppers and eating Pappa Longmont’s Special Wizzy-doo Fries!) was tedious rather than immersive. In fact, this was the first time I’ve seen an author overdo it.
