Brief Summary Aurora Rising by Alastair Reynolds

This is both edgy sci-fi and police mystery, a whodunnit that could have been written by Dashiell Hammett. The main character is Dreyfuss, a policeman or prefect, working for Panoply, the organization responsible for security in the Glitter Band, thousands of habitats orbiting the planet Yellowstone, independent yet linked by a vast, computerized voting mechanism. Something or someone is destroying the habitats, one by one, and destroying any ships sent to help them. At the same time, there’s a shakeup within Panoply, and a power grab. Witnesses are killed. Is this linked to the habitat destruction? Anyway, I was so excited by this book that I couldn’t sleep and stayed up all night reading. This is a standalone book, but it helps to have read some of Reynolds’ Revelation Space books to understand who and what everybody is.
