To call John Banville’s “April in Spain” a crime novel is to do it a disservice. Crimes, past and present, drive this masterfully told story, but what the reader is left with (or at least this reader) is a tragedy brought on through the misguided interplay of some very human characters. This is the latest installment in Banville’s brilliant series set some decades ago and featuring the battered Dublin pathologist Dr. Quirke. Once again, a twisted chain of events with deadly consequences is set in motion by an innocuous act – in this case, Quirke’s cutting a finger while trying to open an oyster. Out of some typically buried compulsion (Quirk has many of them, chiefly a thirst for alcohol), he arranges to meet an intriguing young woman presumed to be dead but in fact toxically alive. Quirke’s need to prove her identity rapidly ensnares a wide assortment of unwilling participants, including a powerful Irish Minister of State, a top civil servant, Quirke’s wife and daughter, an unlikely detective and a cold-blooded hired killer.
