American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins Book Review

” American Dirt” is a good book that you can read online or download to read it later. Before starting the reading or downloading, here is the summary of the book that you can read.  Lydia lives in Acapulco. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while cracks are beginning to show in Acapulco because of the cartels, Lydia’s life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. But after her husband’s tell-all profile of the newest drug lord is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.
Forced to flee, Lydia and Luca find themselves joining the countless people trying to reach the United States. Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

Brief Summary American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

Now all the good stuff aside, the author is no Steinbeck. The characters in the story were sometimes flat, one-dimensional. They behaved in predictable and unthinking ways, as if the goal of getting them through the journey was the author’s main motivation. I wanted to see the character of the son fleshed out more thoroughly. The story opens with an absolutely brilliant scene with him peeing in the bathroom as bullets fly outside. That first page is just riveting. After that first chapter, we never get another glimpse inside his mind. Instead, we hear mainly from the mother. She makes cautious decisions most of the time but randomly does absolutely stupid things. Of course people do this all the time in real life, but the author didn’t integrate those parts of the character and it came off as inconsistent, almost as though they were two different characters written at different times and copy/pasted together into one story. Their travel companions are even less well fleshed-out. My least favorite was the frenemy companion who may have been a cartel spy, may not have been a cartel spy throughout the journey. The big reveal at the end was just cartoonish. I didn’t find that engaging and it served no real narrative purpose. He could have been left out of the story and and it would have improved the book. Again, this part of the book felt like it was from some other piece of writing and had been just dropped in to this book for some reason. All wrong.
