This is really just the perfect story for Greg’s redemption. He was never a bad or unwelcome character in previous stories, but he became dark and abrasive as things progressed, and he really needed to find his own path to happiness. But this isn’t a case of him showing up and helping Violet in her time of need and she immediately falls for him. No, Violet is a very strong person in her own right. She’s been through her own trauma and difficulty, and she is instantly wary of Greg, and doesn’t want to be used as his crutch to make himself feel better. What makes this such a great story is that she lays that out right up front, and he accepts it. They become close as friends, and he becomes a part of the family and friends as he genuinely does everything and anything he can to help. A good portion of this book is very strongly focused on Greg outside of his comfort zone in NOLA, there is very little we see or hear from the characters of the previous books, and honestly for Greg’s story, it’s all the better for it. And then when the outside world starts to seep back into his life, there are some big revelations that happen, and it is exactly what he needed to figure out how to move on from the last year of his life.
