There’s always more to learn in a Charles Todd mystery than who did the murder and murders. A Divided Loyalty is a terrific story about people who survived World War I, The Great War, but not without suffering from emotional post-war trauma, affecting the men who went to France to fight as well as those who became the collateral victims of those who continued to deal with their experiences. I also learned a bit about medical forensics as practiced in the 1920s by physicians who examined the corpses of those whose murders Rutledge was called to investigate. Adding to the story’s mystical attraction is, of course, a short primer about the Avebury “henge” and pre-historic stone circles. My four star rating is, based on the excellent dialogue and the extraordinary professionalism by Rutledge while he investigates an unusual set of murders. I would give this story a five star review if I could better understand a bit more about how Rutledge was able to quickly move around to so many different places in England, while driving in a crank start motor car.
